   3    As with any server daemon that is accessible to the outside world,
   4    it is advisable to run <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> under a
   5    separate user account. This user account should only own the data
   6    that is managed by the server, and should not be shared with other
   7    daemons. (For example, using the user <code class="literal">nobody</code> is a bad
   8    idea.) In particular, it is advisable that this user account not own
   9    the <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> executable files, to ensure
  10    that a compromised server process could not modify those executables.

  12    Pre-packaged versions of <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> will
  13    typically create a suitable user account automatically during
  14    package installation.
  15   </p><p>
  16    To add a Unix user account to your system, look for a command
  17    <code class="command">useradd</code> or <code class="command">adduser</code>. The user
  18    name <span class="systemitem">postgres</span> is often used, and is assumed
  19    throughout this book, but you can use another name if you like.
