   3    PL/Perl is a loadable procedural language that enables you to write
   4    <span class="productname">PostgreSQL</span> functions and procedures in the
   5    <a class="ulink" href="https://www.perl.org" target="_top">Perl programming language</a>.

   7    The main advantage to using PL/Perl is that this allows use,
   8    within stored functions and procedures, of the manyfold <span class="quote">“<span class="quote">string
   9    munging</span>”</span> operators and functions available for Perl.  Parsing
  10    complex strings might be easier using Perl than it is with the
  11    string functions and control structures provided in PL/pgSQL.

  13    To install PL/Perl in a particular database, use
  14    <code class="literal">CREATE EXTENSION plperl</code>.

  16     If a language is installed into <code class="literal">template1</code>, all subsequently
  17     created databases will have the language installed automatically.
